New York

New York is composed of five districts / neighborhoods / parts : The Bronx in the North, Brooklyn in the South East, Queens in the East, Manhattan in the center and Staten Island in the South West.

The history:

Before 1626, the Indians occupied the island of Manhattan, they called it Manhatta.

In 1626, the Dutch arrived and they paid 24$ to buy the island and renamed it New Amsterdam. In 1664, the British renamed New Amsterdam into New York, after capturing the island.

The city today:

Each community lives in its own district: The Asians live in Chinatown, Africans live in Harlem, The Italians live in Little Italy, Columbians and Greeks live in Queens, Eastern Europeans of Jewish religion live in Brooklyn and there is also a Spanish Harlem for Hispanics.

In New York, you can hear more than 120 different languages.

Architecture:

It is mainly composed of high buildings / skyscrapers: The Empire State Building, The Chrysler Building and the Rockefeller Center.

The skyscrapers are located in Midtown. In the financial district / Wall Street, there were the Twin Towers (they were destroyed on September 11th 2001).
