Let’s debate and find arguments about a possible statement recognizing the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples!

How to express your opinion or contradict your adversary in a debate

Arguments in favour of the recognition…

    Arguments against the recognition…

    I think …

    I believe …

    I’m sure (that)…

    There is no doubt about…

    I agree / I don’t agree = I disagree

    Yes but

    So what?

    Yet, …

    -        If the law doesn’t mention the Aborigines, the law doesn’t adapt to them.

    -        Aborigines should have the same status / title as the white so this must be stated in the constitution.

    -        They are definitely a part of Australian history and have to be recognized.

    -        The white man’s life is so different from the Aborigines’ so why should it be stated in the constitution?

    -        What’s the point now? Everybody knows Aborigines exist and have existed for ages…

    -        It’s a lot of paperwork just for a symbolic cause.

SHOULD => used to give advice.

MUST => used to express an external obligation (the law, the rule, the circumstances)

HAVE TO => used to express an internal obligation (I choose to impose it on me)

    You should do your homework.

    I must do your homework.

I have to do my homework.

    What does the statement say?

The audio document explains that the Aborigines do not appear in the Australian constitution / Australians don’t recognize the Aborigines. So there is a debate about including a statement in the constitution because they were the first people who lived in Australia, the British arrived after them. Some people think that it would be a significant step toward reconciliation as the Aborigines have a culture, a language and a heritage and they have always lived in harmony with the land and the water.

Other people think that’s just symbolic and to make them appear in the constitution would not improve the relationship between the white Australian and the Aborigines.

Yet, adopting such a statement would be considered as a clear message…
