This is John Anderson, he is a lifeguard and a California State Park peace officer. He works in a place called Silver Strand State Beach which hosts the California surf Livesaving championships.

This is James Bray, he is a lifeguard and a State Park peace officer. He is also a lifesaver. In the interview, he draws a parallel between competition and real life / he compares competition to real life.

This is Sara kennedy, she is also a lifeguard and a California State Park peace officer. She works at Crystal Cove State Park. She rescues people and saves lives in different surf conditions. She loves working in California State Parks and she is so proud of it. For her, this is the best job that anyone could ever have because she understands that around her people enjoy the parks and the place.

Person 1: My name’s John Anderson, I’m a California State Park peace officer, lifeguard, and we’re here at Silver Strand State Beach, hosting the California Surf Lifesaving Championships.

Person 2: James Bray, State Park peace officer lifeguard, Ventura. The competition side of it, it’s really unique to the lifeguarding aspect of State Parks, and everything that we do here benefits our roles as lifesavers within the State Park system as lifeguards. So the better we do here, the better we can do for serving the public back on the beach while we’re on duty as lifeguards. There’s nothing better than what we get to do on a daily basis

Person 3: I’m Sara Kennedy, I’m a State Park peace officer lifeguard at Crystal Cove State Park. You know, a lot of times when you’re lifeguarding, you’re racing out to a rescue, and this kind of gets us in different surf conditions, and gets us practicing and going full speed so that when you’re going out to a rescue you know how to go through surf in different conditions, and get out there and save a life. I love working for California State Parks, I really believe that California has some great open  recreation areas, and I’m so proud to be able to protect them with the people enjoying the parks, and I just feel like it’s the best job that anyone could ever have.

The better we do here, the better we can do to save people.

This document is an audio document about Jessica Rivas who is a wilderness ranger in Yosemite National Park, in California. She is speaking about her feelings in the park: first, she explains that she feels different ways. For example, water makes her feel tranquil but also intimidated. And the granite cliffs make her feel limitless. For Jessica Rivas / According to her, Yosemite National Park is a universal playground because this place makes everyone equal. She also explains that time stands still in this park. Jessica Rivas spent a summer once in the park for a leadership programme and she has that same feeling today. That summer, she learnt to teach people the stories of Yosemite National Park. She explains to us that that summer, she started to change and today, she keeps changing: this environment influences her.

If she had met a bear in the past, she wouldn’t have known how to react. But today, when she is walking in the park, it’s a magical experience.

L’expression de l’éventualité dans le passé:

“Si elle avait rencontré un ours dans le passé, elle n’aurait pas su comment répondre.”

“If she had met a bear in the past, she wouldn’t have known how to react.”

… elle aurait paniqué => she would have panicked

    if + plu perfect… , would / wouldn’t have + participe passé

    1. Si j’avais eu de l’argent, je serais allé(e) en Californie en vacances.  = If I had had money, I would have gone to California on holidays.

    2. Si nous avions été à Hollywood, nous aurions rencontré des acteurs et des actrices = If we had gone / been to Hollywood, we would have met actors and actresses.

    3. Si nous n’avions pas visité la Silicon Valley, nous aurions eu le temps de traverser le Golden Gate Bridge = If we hadn’t visited Silicon Valley, we would have had time to cross the Golden Gate Bridge.

    4. Si j’avais rencontré Leonardo Di Caprio à Beverley Hills, je lui aurais demandé un autographe. = If I had met LDC in BH, I would have asked him for an autograph.

  • 1. Read the article and find out what kind of jobs you can have in Silicon Valley.

In Silicon Valley you can work in tech jobs, in technological industries, in companies like Google, Apple, Facebook or Tesla, for example.

    2. Find three reasons why it appeals so much to young workers.

It appeals so much to young workers because companies there recruit undergraduates. Another reason is that millennials are interested in technology, not just gadgets. This place is also a model where your ideas are taken into account.

    3. Let’s discuss this issue: Would you be interested in a job in Silicon Valley? Why? Why Not?

interested in a job in Silicon Valley because...

not interested in a job in Silicon Valley

    - All these companies rely on technologies that will be part of the future.

    - They provide a lot of different jobs.

    - It can be an opportunity to earn a lot of money.

    - They recruit undergraduates so it’s an opportunity and you don’t need to study too long, and you have a job very quickly.

    - The working hours can be very long...

    - It’s far from home / France.

    - there will probably be a lot of competition to get the job, so maybe you won’t find one, nothing is sure.

    - It costs a lot of money to go there and live there…

  • 1. Read and try to define what type of document it is.

The document is an ad from a website (www.indeed.com) for a job in a park in California. The ad describes the work environment of the job that is offered and it also gives a description of the tasks that the job implies.

    2. List all the words related to the lexical field of « jobs »

“report, prepare, clean, help, collect, chop, accompany”

    work environment             uniform               relations                    ability

    responsibilities                   “www.indeed.com/jobs”                qualifications

    well-groomed       experience              seasonal                temporary            duty

    3. What qualities do applicants have to have? Explain why?

    “have to + verb” => expression de l’obligation (devoir, avoir à …)

Applicants have to love nature as they will work in a National Park.

They have to be able to hike 12 miles in 8 hours.

They have to have a cooking experience to help the chef.

They have to like living in a secluded area.

They have to be punctual as they need to report on time.

They have to be well-dressed / clean / neat and take care of themselves as they must be well-groomed and wear a uniform.

They have to be organized because they have to prepare tents for meals.

They have to be patient, polite, smiling, agreeable, nice, open-minded as they will deal with guests.

They have to be persevering / hard-working as they are expected to do the cleaning of the cabins and the bathrooms.

They have to be enduring, fit, strong as they will collect and chop wood, this requires strength.

    4. Would you reply to this ad and apply for the job? Why? Why not? Use 100 words.
