    Emmeline Pankhurst

The report starts with a quote (quotation) from Emmeline Pankhurst, in which she explains that they are not lawbreakers / they don’t want to break the law, but they are lawmakers / they want to make the law.

Then the journalist presents Emmeline as a wife, a mother and also a political activist: she created a movement of women for women. It was a freedom movement which aimed at giving a political voice to women in the UK. She was helped by the Suffragettes and they finally made a campaign and led it to success. She gave her life for that cause, risking her health, putting herself in danger. Future feminists followed her ideas… so they all fought for women’s place…

    Churchill’s war speech…

This document is a speech / the recording of a speech by Winston Churchill, Prime Minister of England at the time.

This is a war speech because it was recorded in 1940 and the speaker talks about the WWII (the second world war)

In this speech, he is not really optimistic, neither pessimistic, but rather realistic: he uses words which refer to the reality of the time: “blood, tears, toil and sweat” to express the “monstruous tyranny” of the war and explain with simple words how hard it is going to be. Yet, he keeps repeating one same word: “VICTORY”, to inspire confidence. He wants to provoke reactions, helping people not to give up, cheering them up…

He concludes his speech with “For without victory, there is no survival”, letting no other option to his people but to win the war…
